TITANS 02: Got his first start at shortstop vs. UNLV on Feb. 15 and was a fixture the rest of the season, mostly in the leadoff spot Batted .286 on the season and hit almost the same (.291) in Big West Conference play Was batting .317 before an 0-for-11 skid in the final two games at Long Beach State put the brakes on a torrid 7-game hitting streak (.438, 14-for-32 including 4-for-4 game on May 7 at Pepperdine) Had a 9-game streak from Apr. 14 thru Apr. 28, batting .375 (15-for-40) beginning with a 4-for-5 game at Pacific Second on team (Costa with 27) with 17 multiple-hit games Most memorable hit was an 11th inning home run to break a 2-2 tie and tirgger a 6-2 win at UC Santa Barbara on Apr. 19 Was 2-for-5 with two RBI vs. UNLV on Feb. 16 and had three hits the following day (though he also made three errors) His successful ninth-inning safety squeeze bunt tied the Apr. 27 game vs. Cal State Northridge (the Matadors won in the 10th) Among his many outstanding defensive plays, two stood out: a deflection of a ground ball single vs. LMU on Feb 19, recovering to throw out a runner trying to score from second (the Titans rallied to win by one run), and then a game-saving stop of a bases-loaded smash vs. Long Beach State in an 8-7 Titan win. CUESTA COLLEGE: Was a two-time California Community College Baseball Coaches Association All-American for Coach Larry Lee at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Helped Cuesta reach the state tournament as a sophomore, when the Cougars went 36-12 overall Batted .376 with two homers, 15 doubles, 24 RBI and 31 stolen bases His regular season average of .384 was the fifth best in the 12-team Western State Conference while he finished first in runs scored (52), second in hits (71) and third in triples (5) As a freshman, Smyres finished the regular season batting .422 with a homer, 14 doubles, 35 RBI and 15 stolen bases as Cuesta went 34-13 Was tied for ninth in the state with 73 hits. PASO ROBLES H.S.: Earned a couple of varsity letters at Paso Robles (Calif.) H.S. Played his senior season for Coach Derek Stroud Was a two-time All-Los Padres League infielder and batted .454 with three homers as a senior, when he also earned all-county accolades Helped Paso Robles to a 19-10 overall record and a league title Committed just three errors on the season Went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double against St. Joseph H.S. PERSONAL: Born on May 8, 1981, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
