Kurt Suzuki went 5-for-5, Ronnie Prettyman was a double shy of hitting
for the cycle and P.J. Pilittere was 3-for-5 with four RBI as Cal State
Fullerton pounded Cal Poly, 27-2, in a Big West Conference baseball game
at Goodwin Field Saturday night.
The Titans, who have won 12 of their past 14 games, improved to 27-18
overall and 10-1 in Big West Conference play. Fullerton is in sole possession
of first place, thanks to UC Santa Barbara's win over Long Beach State
on Saturday. Cal Poly fell to 33-18-1 and 5-6.
Fullerton's 27 runs were the third most in the program's 30-year Division
I history and the most since a 28-0 shutout of Pacific in 2001. The Titans
scored 26 runs against Cal Poly last season.
Starter Ricky Romero improved to 9-3, allowing both Cal Poly runs on six
hits in 7.0 innings, while striking out seven and walking one. Nolan Bruyninckx
pitched the final two innings. Cal Poly's Garrett Olson took the loss
to fall to 7-5.
Suzuki, who had the game-winning hit in the ninth inning of Friday's game,
picked up where he left off, collecting hits in all five of his at-bats
-- including his eighth home run -- before being lifted for a pinch-runner
in the sixth.
Prettyman also connected for his first career home run and had a bases-clearing
triple in the fourth to break open a 6-0 lead. Pilittere, who also scored
four runs, extended his career-high hitting streak to 14 games, the longest
by a Titan since the 2002 season.
Justin Turner, Clark Hardman, Brett Pill, Bobby Andrews and Neil Walton
all had a pair of hits for Fullerton.
Cal Poly scored its runs on solo homers by Chalon Tietje and Bret Berglund.
Fullerton will go for a sweep of the Mustangs on Sunday at 1 p.m.
