Danny Dorn hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the 10th
and Mike Martinez pitched five scoreless innings as Cal State Fullerton
rallied for a 12-9 extra-inning win over Fresno State in a nonconference
game at Pete Beiden Field Sunday afternoon.
The Titans improved to 14-13, marking the first time this season their
record has been above .500. Fresno dropped to 12-15. Martinez, who scattered
four hits in five innings, picked up the win to improve to 3-1. Fresno
closer Matt Garza was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-2.
Fullerton's Justin Turner opened the 10th with a single up the middle
before being lifted for pinch-runner Brandon Tripp. Tripp moved to second
on a sac bunt by Ronnie Prettyman and the Bulldogs responded by intentionally
walking Kurt Suzuki. Felipe Garcia flew out to center field for the second
out before Dorn drilled Garza's first offering over the fence in right-center
field. Garza had struck out Dorn to end the game on Friday night.
Fullerton, which trailed, 9-5,, heading into the seventh, closed the gap
to two runs on a two-run homer by Sergio Pedroza in the seventh. Kurt
Suzuki's RBI-single in the eighth made it a one-run game and Clark Hardman's
RBI-groundout in the ninth forced extra innings.
P.J. Pilittere had four hits to lead a contingent of five Titans with
multiple hits. Pedroza, Dorn and Bobby Andrews all homered for Fullerton,
which blasted nine home runs on the weekend.
The Titans, who have next weekend off, will host Pepperdine on Wednesday
at 6 p.m.
