Danny Dorn went 4-for-5, Sergio Pedroza drove in a career-high four runs
and Ryan Schreppel had his strongest outing of the season as 14th-ranked
Cal State Fullerton beat Houston, 9-4, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Titans, who captured their first road series of the year, evened their
record at 6-6 while Houston slipped to 2-5.
Schreppel (1-1) gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but settled
down nicely to pick up his first win. He allowed four runs (three earned)
on seven hits in 7.0 innings. He retired eight consecutive batters over
one stretch before allowing a run in the seventh inning. Mike Martinez
and Vinnie Pestano each pitched a scoreless inning to wrap things up.
Fullerton put up five runs in the fourth inning on Houston starter Garrett
Mock (0-2), Baseball America's preseason pick for Conference
USA Pitcher of the Year. After Justin Turner was hit by a pitch with one
out, the Titans rapped out four consecutive hits. Pedroza had a two-run
triple in between RBI-singles by Kurt Suzuki and P.J. Pilitttere, who
extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Neil Walton added a two-out RBI
double later in the inning.
Pedroza knocked in another pair of runs on a two-run double in the Titans'
four-run seventh. Dorn, who was one hit shy of a career high, banged in
a run with a single to right and Pilittere drove in a run with his fourth
sac fly of the season.
Fullerton plays at LMU on Tuesday before hosting Oklahoma, Georgia Tech
and USC in the Kia Baseball Bash next weekend.
