Lamb, Rouse Named to Olympic Qualifying Team Oct. 28, 2003
Former Cal State Fullerton baseball standouts Mike Lamb and Mike Rouse
have been named to the United States Olympic Qualifying Team that will
compete for a berth in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.
The pair of former Titans is among 24 professional players who will be
managed by Frank Robinson at the Athens Summer Olympic Games Baseball
Qualifying Tournament for the Americas in Panama City from Oct. 30 through
Nov. 10.
Team USA wrapped up play at the team trials in Phoenix, Arizona with a
10-3-1 record that included a 9-3 mark against Arizona Fall League competition,
and a 1-0-1 mark in a pair of exhibition games vs Team Canada.
Lamb, who has spent parts of the last three seasons as in infielder with
the Texas Rangers, played from 1995 to 1997 at Cal State Fulllerton and
hit .337 with 15 homers and 108 RBI in his career.
Rouse, a highly-regarded shortstop in the Oakland organization, batted
.300 with 33 doubles and 53 RBI at double-A Midland this year. He batted
.361 with a homer and seven RBI in the trials in Arizona this month. Originally
drafted by Toronto, Rouse was a key member of the Titans' 2001 College
World Series team. He batted .377 with 12 homers and 62 RBI.
Cal State Fullerton has a rich history of involvement with USA Baseball.
Bob Caffrey (1984), Phil Nevin and Jason Moler (1992) and Mark Kotsay
and Brian Loyd (1996) have all been Olympians. In all, Fullerton has had
13 players make a total of 16 appearances with the USA National Team.
