Brett Pill Selected Top Player of All-Star Game Aug. 16, 2004 Arlington, TX
First baseman Brett Pill of Cal State Fullerton was selected the Outstanding
Player of the 2004 Dr Pepper Texas Collegiate League Futures Game on Sunday
at Ameriquest Field in Arlington.
Pill, who will be a junior in the 2005 season, had
a two-run double in the second inning to give the White Futures Team a
2-0 advantage over the Gray Futures Team. Pill started the game at first
base and also saw action in left field in the White Team’s 6-2 victory.
The Dr Pepper Futures Game, which was played at the home park of the Texas
Rangers, featured 54 of the TCL’s top prospects as selected in consultation
with major league scouts.
Pill was one of the heroes of Fullerton's national
championship game victory against the University of Texas in Omaha in
June. His pinch-hit triple was the key to a 3-run seventh-inning that
carried the Titans to a 3-2 victory.
Pill batted .346, fourth highest in the TCL, with four homers and 28 rbi
in 29 games for the Coppell Copperheads during the regular season. The
righthanded batter helped lead Coppell to a second-place finish at 30-21
in the Tris Speaker Division.
The Copperheads then swept first-place McKinney in a two-game playoff
for the division title and defeated Rogers Hornsby Division champ Graham,
two games to on,e for the inaugural Texas Collegiate League crown. Coppell
defeated Graham, 5-4, in the championship game on Saturday night in Graham,
Texas.
The Texas Collegiate League completed its first season of operation with
the Futures Game on Sunday. The wooden bat summer league was comprised
of 225 collegiate players from 75 schools on eight teams in North Central
Texas.
