Fullerton to Host ASU, Pepperdine and Minnesota May 31, 2004 -- Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton will host Arizona State, Minnesota and Pepperdine
in a regional at Fullerton's Goodwin Field this weekend.
The Titans (36-20) are seeded second in the regional and will open with
No. 3 Minnesota (38-21) on Friday at 7 p.m. No. 1 Arizona State (40-16),
which earned the National No. 7 seed, will meet No. 4 Pepperdine (28-30)
in the first game at 3 p.m. The double-elimination regional will continue
with three games on Saturday and one or two games on Sunday.
The winner will face the winner of the Mississippi regional (Mississippi,
Washington, Tulane and Western Kentucky) in a best-of-three super regional
(June 11-13 or 12-14) with a berth in the College World Series (June 18-28)
on the line.
Fullerton has made 13 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament,
the fifth-longest active streak behind Miami, Florida State, Clemson and
LSU. The Titans own a 64-31 all-time record in regional play and a 97-53
record in NCAA Tournament play. The Titans have made 12 trips to the College
World Series, including three visits in the past five seasons.
Fullerton is playing host to a regional for the fourth time in five years.
The Titans finished in second to top-seeded USC in 2000, but topped a
field of Arizona State, Texas Tech and Temple in 2001 and beat out Notre
Dame, San Diego and Arizona in 2003.
Fullerton is 3-4 all-time against Minnesota and took two of three from
the Golden Gophers in an early season series at Goodwin Field. The Titans
are 18-22 all-time against Arizona State and captured a super regional
from the Sun Devils at Goodwin Field last year. The Titans are 43-34 all-time
against Pepperdine and won a pair of games against the Waves this season.
