Romero Invited to Team USA Trials June 2, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore lefthander Ricky Romero has been invited
to the 2004 USA National Team trial to be held June 20-26 in the Durham,
North Carolina.
The USA Baseball National Team will be selected from a pool of up to 36
players, of which 28 have now been determined. The official 20-man team
roster will be selected following the trials, and announced on June 27.
Romero is s 11-4 with a 3.21 ERA heading into postseason play. He has
struck out a team-high 103 and walked 33 in 123.1 innings. His 11 wins
are tied for 14th in the nation and he is cecond in the Big West Conference
in innings and wins only to Long Beach State’s Jered Weaver. Romero
was named a second-team All-Big West Conference pick after going 6-1 with
a 1.96 ERA in conference play.
The 2004 USA Baseball National Team will open play on Wednesday evening,
June 23 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:00 pm vs Canada. Team USA will
also play an additional seven games in Durham, along with several more
domestic exhibition games prior to representing the United States at 2004
II FISU World University Baseball Championships in Chinese Taipei, July
23-August 1.
Fullerton has a long history of involvement with Team USA. The Titans
are fourth among all collegiate programs in terms of representation on
the national team since 1984. In the summer of 2002, Shane Costa, Wes
Littleton and Chad Cordero all wore red, white and blue.
