Ricky Romero pitched seven strong innings and Shawn Scobee hit his first
career home run as fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton routed UNLV, 13-1,
in a nonconference game at Goodwin Field Saturday night.
The Titans, who are 33-3 at Goodwin Field over the past two seasons, improved
to 2-3 on the season while UNLV fell to 0-2. Fullerton has won 14 of its
last 15 games against the Rebels.
Romero (1-1) scattered four hits and allowed just one run in seven innings
before freshman Vinnie Pestano finished off the Rebels with a pair of
perfect innings.
UNLV starter Jake Vose (0-1) allowed six runs (just two earned) in 5.2
innings to take the loss. His successor -- Shane Clatterbuck -- didn't
fare much better: he gave up a three-run homer to Scobee, the first batter
he faced.
Scobee finished with a career-high four RBI. Brett Pill, Justin Turner
and Felipe Garcia each had two hits for the Titans, who used 18 position
players on the night.
Fullerton blew open a one-run game with five runs in the sixth and added
six runs in the seventh.
The Titans will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
