The Missouri Tigers avoided elimination on Saturday
afternoon at the 2005 NCAA baseball regionals, pounding out 20 hits and
scoring two or more runs in five of the nine innings en route to the 14-6
victory over Harvard at Goodwin Field.
The Tigers improved to 40-22 overall and advanced to meet the loser of
the Cal State Fullerton-Arizona game on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. (PDT).
Harvard is eliminated from the regional and finishes its season 29-17
overall.
Every Missouri starter had at least one hit, including a 4-for-5 performance
at the plate by first baseman Derek Chambers, who also scored twice and
drove in three runs. The Tigers banged out six extra bases hits, including
three triples.
John McKee, Gary Arndt, and Zane Taylor each went 3-for-5 for the Tigers'
offense, which led 7-0 after 1 1/2 innings and 11-4 after four innings.
Erik Dessau (5-1) earned the win for Missouri, going five innings and
allowing just one earned run (four overall) on seven hits, striking out
three. Three relievers combined to hold Harvard to a pair of harmless
runs on eight hits.
Frank Herrmann (5-2) suffered the loss for the Crimson, allowing nine
runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings.
Matt Vance led Harvard by going 3-for-5 at the plate while Ian Wallace
also had three hits and an RBI for the Crimson.
