Jeff Scuderi’s RBI double tied the game at 2-2
and Chuckie Caufield’s single brought home the winning run in the
sixth inning as Oklahoma defeated UCLA 7-2 in game one of the Kia Baseball
Bash at Goodwin Field Friday night.
After a three hour rain delay that saw game two of the Bash scratched,
Oklahoma pulled out the victory and improved to 8-2 with UCLA dropping
to 7-7 overall.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, the Sooner pitchers settled
down ad pitched eight scoreless innings. John Brownell started for Oklahoma
with Will Savage (2-1) coming on in relief to pick up the win.
Hector Ambriz started for the Bruins pitching well enough to win, going
5 innings giving up only one run, but reliever Brian Schroeder gave up
the two runs that mattered as he dropped to 0-1 on the year. Schroeder
finished the game retiring
12 of the 14 batters he faced.
Oklahoma scored six times in the last three innings to seal the win for
the Sooners.
Sooners Ryan Rohlinger, Freddy Rodriguez and Jeff Scuderi all collected
three hits with Rohlinger and Scuderi both picking up RBIs.
Chris Denove was the lone Bruin with more than one hit as he singled in
his first and second at bats.
Mike Metzger had the only UCLA RBI with a single to right in the first
inning.
Tomorrow’s Kia Baseball Bash schedule will be extended from two
to three games due to the rain. Fullerton will play Nevada in the second
game of the tourney at 11 a.m. Nevada will play again against UCLA at
2:30 p.m., with Fullerton coming back at 7 p.m to face the Sooners.
