First baseman Brett Pill paced the Titan offense with
four hits and five RBI as No. 4 Cal State Fullerton downed San Diego State
18-8 in a non-conference game at Tony Gwynn Stadium Tuesday night.
The Titans used a seven-run first inning and an eight-run sixth to improve
to 8-2 with the Aztecs falling to 2-12.
Pill finished the night with a team-leading four hits. He had a three-run
home run to right in the first and a two-run infield single in the sixth.
Pill also scored two runs and stole a base.
The two teams pounded out 35 hits with the Titans out hitting the Aztecs
19-16. Four other Fullerton starters collected double-digits in hits including
three from Sergio Pedroza, Felipe Garcia and Ronnie Prettyman, and two
from John Curtis.
Curtis’ two hits tallied four RBI with Garcia’s two-hit night
bringing home three.
Lauren Gagnier (2-0) pitched an effective fifth inning in relief of John
Estes to pick up his second win of the season with Aztec Bret Douglas
dropping to 0-2 by giving up nine runs in two and two-thirds innings of
work.
Adam Jorgenson started and allowed six runs and 12 hits in three innings
of work.
Fullerton used four pitchers relief of Jorgenson with Gagnier, Jared Clark
and Wes Roemer working five scoreless innings, giving up three hits while
striking out seven.
Fullerton returns home to host Nevada, Oklahoma and UCLA in the annual
Kia Baseball Bash. The Titans will take on Nevada on Friday, Oklahoma
on Saturday and UCLA on Sunday. Games will begin at 7 p.m., 7 p.m. and
4:30 respectively.
