Felipe Garcia’s three-run double in the seventh, blew the game wide
open as No. 3 Cal State Fullerton (13-2) upset No. 1 Tulane (14-2) 15-1
in front of 4,085 fans at Turchin Stadium in a non-conference baseball
game Friday night.
The Titans took care of Green Wave pitcher Brian Bogusevic (3-1) as they
knocked him around for six runs on ten hits over his six innings of work.
Fullerton ended the night with 16 total hits with Brett Pill and Justin
Turner leading the way with three a piece. Turner scored four of the Titan
runs while Pill Drove in five. Garcia’s double gave him four total
RBI on the night.
Ricky Romero had great command of the strike zone as he picked up his
fifth win of the season without a loss. He faced just five over the minimum
over his 6.1 innings of work. Tulane did not even reach second base until
designated hitter Scott Madden doubled off Romero to lead off the seventh
inning, Two batters later Will Rice singled home Madden for the only run
Romero would allow. Romero finished the night allowing just three hits
while striking out four against a team that had an overall batting average
of .320.
Wes Roemer and Lauren Gagnier finished the game for Romero going the final
2.2 innings with Roemer allowing the only hit between them. The bullpen
has allowed just one earned run over the last 25.1 innings.
Titan third baseman Ronnie Prettyman extended his hitting streak to 14
games with a single to center in the second inning, and with his RBI-single
off of Romero, Madden extends his hitting streak to 13 games.
The Titans also flexed a little muscle on Friday night, with Pill and
Prettyman knocking the ball out of Turchin Stadium.
The Titans scored 12 times over the last three innings with Tulane’s
Ricky Fairchild taking a big hit, allowing nin runs over 2.2 innings walking
four and striking out only one.
The two nationally-ranked teams will meet again tomorrow from at Zephyr
Field, the local minor league stadium, where there is a crowd of approximately
10,000 fans is expected. Ryan Schreppel (2-0, 1.29 ERA) will be on the
mound against Tulane’s Micha Owings (2-1, 2.89 ERA) in game two
of the three-game series. Game time is Noon PST.
