Pedroza Powers Titans to Victory over Green Wave March 12, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
The long ball played a big factor as the No. 3 Cal State Fullerton Titans
narrowly beat the No. 1 Tulane Green Wave 9-8 in a non-conference match-up
at Zephyr Field Saturday afternoon. 9,385 fans got to see six home runs
hit by the two offensive clubs with four of them by the Titans. Sergio
Pedroza hit two in a game for the second time this year to lead all players.
Fullerton, with the win, improved to 14-2 extending their winning streak
to nine
games. Tulane dropped just their third game making their overall record
14-3.
Ryan Schreppel (3-0) went 5.2 innings allowing only 3 Tulane hits picking
up his third win of the year, and Vinnie Pestano picked up his team-leading
fourth save retiring the last six batters he faced.
The Green Wave made it close by scoring five times in the seventh inning
off of relievers Lauren Gagnier and Pestano. The big blow being a controversial
three run home run off the bat of Tulane catcher Greg Dini. Dini drove
the ball deep to left field where Danny Dorn went back and made a leaping
effort for the ball at the top of the wall. It appeared that it bounced
off the wall for a double, but after a conference with all four umpires,
it was ruled a home run that bounced off of the fence behind the wall
to bring the Green Wave within one at 9-8.
Fullerton’s four home runs by Pedroza, Ronnie Prettyman, Danny Dorn
gave the Titans a 6-1 edge through the first five, all of them coming
off of Tulane starter Micha Owings. Owings who came into the game with
a 2-1 record and a 2.89 ERA gave up seven runs on eight hits in five innings
of work, picking op his second loss of the year. Dorn and Pedroza’s
dingers landed in the Zephyr Field's swimming pool area beyond the right
field wall.
Tulane battled back scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth capped
by Brad Emaus’ third home run of the year to pull within three.
Cal State Fullerton scored three times in the sixth without the help of
the round-tripper. Both Prettyman and John Curtis contributed with RBI
singles giving the Titans a 9-3 lead.
Fullerton, which remains unbeaten against Tulane all-time (10-0), looks
for a sweep as lefty Scott Sarver (3-1) is scheduled to be on the mound
back at Turchin Stadium for a 11 a.m. PST start on Sunday.
