Top-ranked Tulane bashed out 19 hits on the afternoon, offsetting four
home runs by No. 3 Cal State Fullerton, en route to a 13-9 victory on
Sunday afternoon in New Orleans, La.
The Titans saw their nine-game winning streak snapped in falling to 14-3
overall on the season. The Green Wave earned their first win over Fullerton
in 11 tries in improving to 15-3 overall.
The series drew a Tulane record 17,000-plus fans over the three game series,
which featured a Saturday afternoon contest at Zephyr Field, the home
of the local minor league ball club, that drew 9,385 fans.
Fullerton mustered only nine hits for the game -- the first time since
Feb. 5 against Stanford that the Titans have been held to less than 12
hits.
Justin Turner and Sergio Pedroza each had two hits and two RBI to lead
the Titans, who bashed four home runs on the day with Turner, Pedroza,
Brandon Tripp, and Brett Pill all leaving the yard.
The Green Wave led 10-5 after three innings before the Titans began to
chip a away. Ronnie Prettyman's RBI double in the sixth and Tripp's solo
shot inthe seventh brought the Titans to within 10-7 before Tulane exploded
again for two runs in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice and a balk
and another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Cat Everett.
Pedroza's two-run home run in the ninth provided for the final scoring.
Scott Sarver (3-2) suffered the loss for Fullerton, allowing six earned
runs on seven hits in just one inning pitched. J.R. Crowel (4-0) remained
undefeated on the season despite allowing six earned on six hits in 5
1/3 innings.
Tulane was powered by the top of its lineup as the 1-2-3 batters went
a combined 10-for-15 with six runs scored and eight RBI.
