No. 9 Arizona’s Jason Seefeld knocked an RBI single up the middle
off of Ricky Romero to break a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh
inning to give the Wildcats the only run they would need to defeat the
No. 2 Cal State Fullerton Titans 1-0 in a non-conference match-up at a
soggy Goodwin Field Friday night.
The Titans dropped their second game in a row to fall to 14-4, while the
Wildcats improve to 16-7.
Titan starter Ricky Romero (5-1) pitched well enough to win, with the
Wildcats capitalizing on their opportunity to score in the seventh. Romero
struck out eight over his eight innings of work and gave up only six Arizona
hits en route to his first loss of the season.
The Titans left nine runners on base and were unable to get a man across
the plate as there were shut out for the first time this season.
John Meloan held the Titans to four hits over 7.2 innings of work, only
the fourth time this season that Fullerton has been held to less than
11 hits. Meloan struck out five and walked four in picking up his fourth
win without a defeat. Mark Melancon picked up his fourth save in his 1.1
innings of work.
Felipe Garcia and Justin Turner Both collected two hits to lead all players,
while Ronnie Prettyman extended his team-leading 17-game hitting streak
with a leadoff double in the ninth inning.
The two teams will face each other Saturday evening with Ryan Schreppel
(3-0, 1.87 ERA) on the hill for the Titans due to face Arizona hurler
Kevin Guyette (4-1, 3.29 ERA). Game time is 6 p.m.
