Five Titans blasted home runs and six knocked in three or more runs as
Cal State Fullerton (22-8, 4-1) dominated Cal State Northridge (12-16-1,
0-5) in a 24-0 blowout in Saturday afternoon’s Big West Conference
match-up at Matador Field.
Bobby Andrews, Sergio Pedroza, Brett Pill, Jared Clark and Evan McArthur
took advantage of the gusty winds in Northridge as they each connected
for home runs on a day that also saw the Titans plate at least one run
in every inning except the first and eighth innings. Fullerton handed
Northridge its greatest margin of defeat in the school’s history
with the 24-hit, 24-run barrage.
Hidden among the loud Titan offense, was a quiet Wes Roemer (2-1) who
picked up his second consecutive win allowing only four hits over seven
scoreless innings of work. The freshman faced just two batters over the
minimum while striking out four, before giving way to Nolan Bruyninckx
in the eighth inning. Roemer got the help from the pitcher’s best
friend as he chalked up four double plays in his first six innings. Roemer,
Bruyninckx and the Titan defense held the Matador bats quiet allowing
only five total hits, and not allowing a runner to advance past second
base.
Northridge starter Craig Baker was touched for nine runs on nine hits
in 2.1 innings of work in picking up the loss, and falling to 4-4 on the
season. Four more Northridge pitchers were touched for the remaining 15
runs, with all but three of the 24 being earned. Jeremy Berg went 3.2
innings, the longest stretch for any Northridge hurler, giving up five
runs, but also striking out five Titans in the three hour, five minute
affair.
Every Titan starter except Danny Dorn picked up at least one hit, with
Felipe Garcia the lone starter collecting only one. Nine hitters had multi-hit
day with Andrews, Pedroza and Pill all collecting three hits. McArthur,
pinch-hitting for John Curtis came on late but still led all players with
four RBI, including two from his pinch-hit homer in the sixth inning.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Matador Field to conclude the
three-game series with southpaws Scott Sarver (CSUF) and Jimmy Brettl
(CSUN) scheduled on the bump. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
