Sarver and Pedroza Lift Titans to 30-Win Season Apr. 24, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
Cal Sate Fullerton (30-11) reached the 30-win plateau for the 31st straight
year as they defeated the UC Davis Aggies (21-17) 5-2 to complete the
non-conference series sweep at Dobbins Baseball Complex behind two hits
and three RBI by Sergio Pedroza and a strong pitching performance by Scott
Sarver.
Sarver (6-2) battled through seven complete innings surrendering two runs
(one earned) on eight hits while striking out two to earn the win. Vinnie
Pestano picked up his eighth save, his second of the series, by working
a perfect eighth and ninth striking out two to send the Titans back home
with a perfect first trip to Davis.
Sergio Pedroza, who had been held to just one hit in the series, got the
Titans on the board first in the third inning as he singled home John
Curtis and Ronnie Prettyman to give Fullerton a 2-0 advantage. He later
walked with the bases loaded to bring home Curtis, the go ahead run, in
the top of the seventh as Fullerton batted ten hitters and scored three
times to extend their lead to 5-2.
The Titans plated three of their five runs off of Davis starter and eventual
loser Jeremy McChesney, whose overall record fell to 1-1 on the season
while striking out four and walking three. Nik Aurora cam in to relieve
McChesney but was chased after just three batters, two of which came around
to score.
Pedroza and Brett Pill led the Titan offense with two hits apiece. Pill’s
first hit was an RBI pinch-hit single in the three run seventh after getting
starting the game on the bench for the second day in a row.The Titans
have never compiled a losing season in the program’s 31-year Division
I existence. The 1989 squad, under then Head Coach Larry Cochell, was
30-27, marking the lowest Titan win total ever.
Cal State Fullerton comes home without a midweek game this week after
completing six games in the last six days, going 4-2 dropping games to
No. 25 USC and Pepperdine.
Santa Barbara will visit Goodwin Field this weekend as Fullerton gets
back to their Big West Conference schedule. The Titans will send Ricky
Romero, Wes Roemer and Scott Sarver up against the Gauchos Friday, Saturday
and Sunday respectively.
