Titans Break Waves 13-4 Behind Schreppel and Co. May 10, 2005 – Fullerton, Calif
Box Score
The Titans scored seven times in the third inning, highlighted by a Brandon
Tripp grand slam home run, as No. 1 Cal State Fullerton defeated Pepperdine
13-4 in a non-conference baseball game at Goodwin Field Tuesday night.
Going into a bye weekend, the Titans improve
to 33-12 overall and have won 11 of their last 12 games. The Waves with
the loss, fall to 30-17 on the year.
Ryan Schreppel (5-0) in his first game back after arthroscopic surgery
threw three innings allowing only one run on two hits, earning the win
on the designated staff day. Nick Kliebert’s two-out double in the
second inning was the only blemish to Schreppel’s first pitching
line since March 25 versus Long Beach State striking out one in his return.
The Titans wasted no time getting on the board as Justin Turner knocked
his first of two triples before getting driven in by Sergio Pedroza’s
single up the middle for the 1-0 first-inning advantage.
Pepperdine evened the score at one run a piece in the top of the second
off Schreppel, before Fullerton rolled back sending eleven hitters to
the plate in their half of the third.
Fullerton knocked out Pepperdine starting pitcher Jason Dominguez in the
bottom of the third as it plated six of the eight batters he faced, capped
by Tripp’s four-run blast. Dominguez, in his last start versus the
Titans on April 19, three-hit the Titans for seven innings, but this time
picked up the loss going just 2.2 innings and fell to 1-5 on the season.
Only Robert Della Grotta, one of four Wave pitchers, left the game without
surrendering a run, as the Titans scored three times off of both James
Johnson and Adam Olbrychowski in relief of Dominguez.
A trio of Titan arms took care of the Wave offense as Jared Clark and
Adam Jorgenson finished the final six innings behind Schreppel. Clark
surrendered two runs on four hits in his three innings of work and Adam
Jorgenson allowed just one run on one hit as he closed out the last third
of the game. By pitching three innings without relinquishing the lead,
Jorgenson earned his third save of the year.
Brandon Tripp was just a double away from hitting for the cycle as he
singled in his first at bat, homered in his second and tripled in his
third as he finished the night 3-for-3 and drove in five. He also scored
three of the Titan runs and made five putouts in centerfield.
Turner was the only other Titan with a multi-hit game with a pair of triples.
The Titans for the first time in four games reached the 10-hit plateau
after being held to just 16 hits all last weekend by Cal Poly’s
pitching staff.
The Titans rounded out their scoring as they crossed home three times
in the top of the eight on no hits as Justin Sandberg committed back-to-back
errors on two fly balls to left field with two outs in the inning giving
them their 13-4 differential.
Fullerton will not play any games this weekend and will take advantage
of the time off to celebrate their 2004 national championship with the
President of the United States at the White House. The 2004 squad will
leave Wednesday morning and return Saturday afternoon after a Friday afternoon
with President Bush.
The Titans return to action with a 3:00 afternoon game at Goodwin Field
versus San Diego next Tuesday, May 17. The rare afternoon game has been
shifted to accommodate San Diego’s finals schedule.
