Chad Cordero Named 2005 National League All-Star July 5, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
Former Cal State Fullerton closer Chad Cordero became the third former
Titan to be named to a Major League All-Star squad as the Washington Nationals
closer was selected as one of 31 players named to the 2005 National League
All-Star Team on July 3.
The 76th annual All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, July 12, at Comerica
Park in Detroit, Mich.
Cordero is the first Titan All Star since Phil Nevin was selected as a
reserve for the National League squad in 2001 as a member of the San Diego
Padres. Tim Wallach was selected as an All Star five times in his career
(1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990) as a member of the Montreal Expos.
Cordero leads the Major Leagues with 29 saves (in 32 opportunities) while
also posting a 2-1 record and a 1.25 ERA for the Washington Nationals,
who stand in first place in the National League East with a 50-32 overall
record (4 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta) as of July 5.
He has appeared in 42 games, allowing just 34 hits and 10 runs (six earned)
in 43 1/3 innings, walking 10 and striking out 38.
In his previous two seasons with the Expos, Cordero was a combined 8-3
in 81 appearances, posting 15 saves and a 2.79 ERA while striking out
95 in 93 2/3 innings.
Cordero, who holds the Cal State Fullerton record for career saves with
34, was the Titans' 10th first-round draft pick, as the Montreal Expos
selected him with the 20th overall selection in 2003.
He was a three-time All-Big West Conference selection in a Titan uniform
and a member of Team USA in 2002. Named a Freshman All-American by three
different organizations in 2001, Cordero also earned second-team All-America
honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and third-team All-America
honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate
Baseball in 2003.
