Pill Gets Recognition for His Outstanding Play March 8, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
A watchful eye is now on two Titans instead of one. Today the College
Baseball Foundation announced that sophomore first baseman Brett Pill
(Covina, Calif.) was added to the revised 2005 Wallace Watch, which annually
presents the Brooks Wallace award to the top collegiate baseball player
of the year. Last season, Titan catcher Kurt Suzuki was the inaugural
recipient. Pill joins teammate Ricky Romero as the second Titan named
to the 2005 Wallace Watch.
Pill is having a superb sophomore season at first base hitting .431 on
the season including three home runs while knocking in a team-leading
14 RBI. Pill is currently riding a season-long, 13-game hitting streak
contributing to Fullerton’s 11-2 overall record.
The Wallace Watch will be trimmed down to 12 semi-finalists on May 24,
2005, and then again to three finalist on June 16, 2005. The three finalists,
their parents and coaches will then travel to Lubbock, Texas for a golf
tournament, dinner and banquet in there honor where the Brooks Wallace
Award-winner will be presented his award.
The Wallace Award is dedicated in the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop
and assistant coach who fought and finally succumb to cancer at the age
of 27.
The selection committee for the Wallace award is comprised of a national
panel of coaches, sports information directors, former winners and beat
writers who follow the spot most closely.
