Defeat UCSB in Women's Gymnastics Jan. 26, 2002 Santa Barbara, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton junior Kelly Mathiasen took home individual
apparatus titles on the balance beam and vault to help lead the Titans
to a victory over former Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara in
women's gymnastics on Saturday night in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Titans posted a season-best 192.600 overall team score to the Gauchos'
187.175. Cal State Fullerton's previous high score was 192.175 set against
California on Jan. 12.
Mathiasen was the star for the Titans as she scored a near perfect season
high 9.900 on the beam and an equally impressive 9.800 on vault for another
season best mark. Both marks were just short of tying career highs in
both events.
Cal State Fullerton swept first place in all the individual events, as
senior Megan Berry won the floor exercise with a score of 9.825 and senior
Joanna Hughes posted a season-best 9.850 on the uneven parallel bars to
bring home first place.
The Titans were helped by a total team effort as Nicole
Kasson (9.800) and Theresa O'Gara (9.750) finished second and third on
the floor while Kasson also finished third on the beam with a 9.750.
A pair of freshman also competed well with Kimberly Runciman finishing
second on the beam with a score of 9.825 and Annette Reyes finishing second
on vault with a score of 9.625.
Berry and senior Andrea Boggs finished second and third respectively on
bars with scores of 9.775 and 9.725.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (Feb. 8) as they travel
to Tempe, Ariz. to take on Arizona State along with Western Gymnastics
Conference rivals Denver and Southern Utah.
