Titans in Women's Gymnastics JAN. 12, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif. Leading after two rotations, host Cal State Fullerton could not hold on to its slim advantage, suffering numerous falls on the balance beam, as California shined in the final two events of the night to defeat the Titans, 193.925-192.175, in the Titans’ 2002 women’s gymnastics home opener on Saturday night at Titan Gym in front of 402 fans. Cal State Fullerton fell to 0-2 to start the season while California won its season opener and improved to 1-0. The Titans held a narrow lead after the first two events, scoring a 47.875 on the vault and a 48.450 on the uneven bars for a total of 96.325. California was right behind Fullerton with a 96.250 total after two rotations. However, the Golden Bears stormed back with the Titans struggling on the beam, scoring a 48.575 on the floor exercise while the Titans scored a 47.450 on the beam, and solidified the victory with a 49.100 score on the beam to Fullerton’s 48.400 on the floor. The Titans did have some outstanding individual performances on the night as senior Joanna Hughes (9.825) and Rachel Allen (a career-high 9.750) finished 1-2 on the uneven bars, as Fullerton had four of the top five performers in the event. Hughes and junior Kelly Mathiasen shared the title on the floor exercise with a score of 9.875. Mathiasen was second in the all-around with a score of 39.000 while Hughes finished third with a score of 38.625. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (Jan. 18) as they take on defending national champion UCLA and Boise State at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym.
