Named WGC Gymnast of the Week JAN. 8, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif. Cal State Fullerton senior gymnast Joanna Hughes (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonard’s College) was named the inaugural Western Gymnastics Conference Gymnast of the Week as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. Hughes won two events for the Titans in Cal State Fullerton’s season opener on Jan. 5 at Utah State. She won the vault with a score of 9.825 and placed first on the parallel bars with a final score of 9.825 to help the Titans to an early lead after two events. This is the first year for the Western Gymnastics Conference formed after the Big West discontinued sponsorship of women’s gymnastics following the 2001 season. Other conference members include Utah State, Denver, Boise State and Southern Utah. The Aggies will host the inaugural conference championship meet on Mar. 23 in Logan, UT. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 12) as it opens the home portion of the 2002 schedule with a meet against Pacific-10 Conference rival California at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym. ####
