Named WGC Gymnast of the Week JAN. 22, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif. Cal State Fullerton junior Kelly Mathiasen (Chula Vista, Calif./Aztec Gymnastics) was named the Western Gymnastics Conference Gymnast of the Week the league announced on Tuesday. Mathiasen becomes the second Titan gymnast in three weeks to earn the award after teammate Joanna Hughes was the Conference’s first-ever Gymnast of the Week back on Jan. 7. Against defending national champion UCLA and league rival Boise State, Mathisen posted an solid 39.050 to capture the all-around title and help the Titans to a second place finish behind the Bruins. She shared the vault title with Hughes, scoring a 9.725, and tied her career high with a 9.90 on the floor exercise – good for a third place tie on the apparatus with teammate Megan Berry. The Titan women’s gymanstics team returns to action this weekend, travelling up the coast to take on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 26) at 7 p.m. ####
