Mathiasen Named WGC Athlete of the Week Jan. 22, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior gymnast Kelly Mathiasen was named the Western
Gymnastics Conference Athlete of the Week after stellar performances against
some of the top womens gymanstics programs in the nation this past
weekend.
Mathiasen (Chula Vista, Calif.) won the all-around last Friday night (Jan.
17) in the Titans dual meet with top-ranked UCLA, scoring a career-high
39.450. She won the individual title on the floor exercise with a 9.90,
finished second on bars (9.85) and third on the vault (9.825).
Mathiasen also scored a 9.875 on the beam against the Bruins in a meet
which was decided by just two-tenths of a point the closest margin
in the history of the series between the two schools.
On Sunday at the four-team Bruin Classic, Mathiasen competed in only three
events and performed well against tough competition from host UCLA, California
and UC Davis. She finished seventh on the vault (9.775), tied for fifth
on bars (9.875) and tied for fourth on beam (9.90).
It is the second career Athlete of the Week honor for Mathiasen, after
earning the honor on Jan. 14 of last season. She was a second team all-conference
honoree in the all-around and earned first-team honors on bars and beam.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 26) as the Titans
travel to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets in a dual meet at 2
p.m.
