Mathiasen Earns Conference Honors March 4, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior All-Arounder Kelly Mathiasen earned Western
Gymnastics Conference Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday morning after
leading the Titans to a season-best performance against Southern Utah
last Friday night.
It is the second honor of the season of Mathiasen and the third of her
career after earning Athlete of the Week honors once as a junior.
Mathiasen broke her own school record in the all-around with a 39.600
and won three events this past week against the Thunderbirds. She tied
her career high on vault with a 9.90 and took home first-place honors
on bars (9.875) and beam (9.90). Her previous career high in the all-around
with 39.450 set earlier this year in a narrow loss to UCLA on Jan. 17.
The only event she did not win was the floor exercise where Titan junior
Latoya Milburn broke a 10-year old school record with a 9.975 to break
Celeste Delias mark of 9.950 on Mar. 20, 1993. Mathiasen finished
second in the event with a 9.925.
Mathiasen now owns nine of the top 10 all-around scores in the history
of the program.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (March 9) at 2 p.m. as
the Titans host San Jose State and Sacramento State at Titan Gym.
