Junior Binta Coleman placed first in three of five events but the Sacramento
State gymnastics team could not overcome falls on bars and beam as the
Hornets fell to Cal State Fullerton, 193.125-191.550, Sunday afternoon
at the Hornet Nest.
Sacramento State dropped to 2-3 on the year while the Titans raised their
record to 4-3.
Sacramento State (vault) and Cal State Fullerton (bars) were even after
one rotation with a score of 48.250 apiece. The Titans' lead crept to
96.125-95.675 after the Hornets recorded two falls on bars and finally
took control of the meet after three rotations when Sacramento State fell
three times on beam.
Coleman, a native of Elk Grove, Calif., placed first on vault (9.775),
floor (9.750) and all-around (a season-high 38.950). The junior also finished
tied for third on bars (9.725) and fourth on beam (9.700) to also lead
the squad.
Sophomore Meloney Greer placed first on bars (9.775), freshmen Trista
Condren and Kimiye Narasaki finished tied for second on vault (9.650)
and sophomore Nirvana Zaher placed tied for third (9.700) on floor and
fourth all-around (37.650) to also contribute for the Hornets.
Freshmen Jamie Donkin (9.650, beam) and Sharee Burgess (9.575, floor)
recorded their first team scores for the Hornets while freshman Courtney
Purdy (9.550, beam) competed in her first collegiate exhibition.
Senior Kelly Mathiasen led the Titans with a first-place finish on beam
(9.850) while also placing second on bars (9.750) and all-around (38.925).
Freshman Brittany Hoffman tied for first on floor with a score of 9.750
to also lead the squad.
Sacramento State will next face UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m.
in Recreation Hall.
