Titans Finish Fourth at NCAA Regionals April 12, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
The Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics team posted its best finish
at the NCAA Regionals since 1994 and the highest score ever in regional
competition in the history of the program, finishing fourth ahead of Boise
State and San Jose State on Saturday night at the Bank of America Arena
at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in Seattle, Wash.
The Titans had finished fifth in last year's regionals and sixth in 2001.
Second-ranked Nebraska and LSU finished first and second to advance from
the regional to the NCAA Championships at Nebraska on April 24-26. The
Huskers won the event with a 196.650 while the Tigers posted a score of
195.700.
Washington finished third at 195.675 followed by the Titans at 193.175.
The Broncos and Spartans finished in a tie for fifth at 192.875.
Fullerton senior Kelly Mathiasen narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA
Championships in the all-around, finishing just .02 behind Washington's
Tacia LaBatte. LaBatte and teammate Carly Dockendorf will head to the
NCAA Championships in the all-around as the top two all-around competitiors
not on a team to advance.
Mathiasen finished in a tie for 11th on the beam (9.800), tied for 14th
on bars (9.800), and tied for 18th on the vault (9.725). She scored a
9.650 on the floor and had to count a step out of bounds.
Jennifer Halloran finished in a tie for 11th with Mathiasen on the beam
while Latoya Milburn and Annette Reyes were the Titans' highest finishers
on the floor exercise, notching twin 9.750's to finish in a tie for 13th.
