Finish Second at WGC Championships March 29, 2003 Fullerton, Calif. Boise State finished first on both vault and bars and those performances pushed the Broncos to a first-place finish at the second annual Western Gymnastics Conference meet Saturday night in Cedar City, Utah. The Broncos finished at 195.650 to edge Cal State Fullerton, which finished second with a 195.600. Host Southern Utah finished third at 195.375 and Utah State was fourth at 194.350. The Titans were paced by senior Kelly Mathiasen, who finished second in the all-around with a 39.475 and won the balance beam with a 9.950. She also finished tied for sixth on bars (9.825) and tied for fourth on the floor (9.875). The Broncos started on bars and posted a 49.225 to take an early lead over Fullerton (49.125 on floor), SUU (48.900 on vault) and USU (48.850 on beam). Although BSU struggled on beam with a 47.950 to allow the other teams to move ahead, the Broncos were solid on floor at 49.175 then clinched the win with a 49.300 on vault. The Titans must now await the complicated national qualifying picture to see if the team advances to the NCAA Western Regionals on Apr. 612.
