Thunderbirds Defeat Titans in WGC Match-Up

Cal State Fullerton junior Annette Reyes earned individual all-around honors and junior Kristy Parker finished first on vault, but the Titans could not overcome a solid all-around performance from Southern Utah in a 193.950-192.050 loss on Friday night in Cedar City, Utah.

Fullerton fell to 1-3 overall this season while the Thunderbirds improved to 4-1.

Reyes scored a 38.875 to win the all-around, but Southern Utah had event winners on three of the four apparatus. Reyes' night was highlighted by a tie for third on bars with a 9.75, and a tie for second on beam with a 9.80. She edged SUU's Carly Geronimo by .075 for the all-around title.

Parker, who won vault with a 9.775, also finished tied for second on beam (9.80). Freshman Erica Ficarotta was tied for third on vault with teammate Sharon Snell with a score of 9.65, freshman Ina Higashi-Izumi was tied for third on bars (9.75), and freshman Brittany Evans was tied for third on floor with a 9.80.

Although SUU posted a season-high on only one event, vault, the Thunderbirds posted their second-highest mark of the young season in the other three events.

The Thunderbirds topped the Titans on three of four events, winning bars 48.70-48.40, floor 48.775-48.65 and beam 48.425-46.825. CSUF edged the 'Birds on vault 48.175-48.05.

Geronimo finished second in the all-around with a season-high 38.800 which included a season-high-tying 9.875 on beam and a season-high 9.80 on bars. Freshman Sakhitab's 9.80 on bars was a career-best while Bauer posted a season-high and career-high-tying 9.925 in placing first on floor.

SUU's Sheena Shaw equalled or bettered her season-highs on floor (9.825), bars (9.675) and vault (9.675) while Bauer (9.80) and Jessiann Andrus (9.775) had season-highs on beam. Freshman Sabrina Madsen, a late addition to the vault line-up, posted a career-best 9.725.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 1) as one of four teams competing at UCLA on Super Bowl Sunday. The host Bruins, Titans, Arizona State, and San Jose State will all compete beginning at 2 p.m.
