Titans Beat Bruins for First Time Since 1996 Feb. 20, 2004 Fullerton, Calif. Complete Results
Cal State Fullerton junior Kristy Parker and senior Latoya Milburn each
won individual event honors and freshman Erica Ficarotta took home individual
all-around honors as the Titans upset No. 3 UCLA, 194.275-193.600, on
Friday night at Titan Gym.
Fullerton improved to 3-5 overall in 2004, defeating the Bruins for the
first time since the 1996 season opener and snapping a 16-meet losing
streak to UCLA. The victory was the second straight for the Titans after
downing Sacramento State back on Feb. 8. UCLA fell to 6-3 overall, snapping
a six-meet winning streak.
The Bruins took the early lead despite having to count a pair of falls
on the apparatus, scoring a 48.200 on bars behind Jamie Dantzscher's event-winning
score of 9.90. The Titans, meanwhile, posted a solid vault score of 48.100
buoyed by Parker's 9.75.
That would be the last time Cal State Fullerton would trail in the meet.
UCLA struggled on vault, scoring just a 47.475 having to count a pair
of 9.4's and a 9.30. The Titans surged ahead as Ficarotta scored a career-high
9.875 to lead the bars team and stake Fullerton to a .825 advantage after
two rotations.
The Titans continued to perform well, posting four scores on beam of 9.70
or better, including Annette Reyes' 9.80, holding steady with the Bruins,
who scored a 48.700 on floor despite stepping out of bounds twice. UCLA
was paced by Jeanette Antolin's 9.95 and Dantzscher's 9.90 on the apparatus.
However, with UCLA closing fast, Fullerton shut the door, scoring a season-high
49.375 on floor with all five scores going for 9.825 or better, including
Milburn's event-winning tally of 9.975. The Bruins scored a 49.225 on
beam to keep it close, counting all five scores at 9.775 or higher.
Ficarotta scored a 39.125 in the all-around, finishing fourth on vault
(9.625), tied for second on bars (9.875), tied for fifth on beam (9.775),
and tied for fifth on floor (9.85). Reyes was the only other all-around
competitor, finishing with a 38.475.
Cal state Fullerton returns to action on Friday (Feb. 27) as the Titans
host Seattle Pacific and UC Davis in their final home meet of the season
at 7 p.m.
