Senior Stefanie Aeder tied her own school record with a 9.950 on floor
and freshman Alexis Tsurumoto matched her personal-high with a 9.875 on
bars to help lead Sacramento State to a 194.350-192.350 victory over Cal
State Fullerton Friday night at the Hornets Nest.
Aeder and Tsurumoto were also joined in the win column by senior Nirvana
Zaher who scored 38.575 in the all-around.
As a team, Sacramento State moved ahead of San Jose State for the sixth
spot in the West Region. The team's score was its second-highest this
season and improved its Regional Qualifying Score to 193.455. The top
six teams in the region will likely advance to the NCAA Regional on Apr.
9 in Seattle.
The Hornets opened the meet with a 48.375 on vault. The team was sparked
by 9.800 from Zaher, a 9.775 from Jessica Hoffman and a 9.725 from Nicole
Giao. Cal State Fullerton's Brittany Hoffman won the event title with
a 9.825.
In the second rotation, Sacramento State scored 48.825 on bars. The team
counted five scores above 9.650 to help its cause. That total included
Tsurumoto's 9.875 and a pair of 9.775s from Carrie Kinghorn and Kimiye
Narasaki. Senior Meloney Greer scored 9.750.
The Hornets' momentum was taken off track at the start of the third rotation.
Junior Trista Condren started strong with a 9.650 before the team endured
back-to-back falls. The team, however, recovered with a 9.550 from Stefanie
Aeder, a 9.675 from Narasaki and a 9.750 from Melissa Genovese. The Titans'
Brittany Evans finished first with 9.775 while Genovese and Narasaki were
second and third, respectively.
Sacramento State secured the team title during its final rotation with
a 49.275 on floor. Aeder capped the lineup by matching her own school
record which was set last season. The lineup began with a strong 9.700
from Kinghorn (which was not counted toward the team scores).Narasaki
followed with a 9.825 before Condren scored 9.775. From that point, Jessica
Hoffman tallied a 9.850 and Zaher closed her home career with a 9.875.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (March 25) as the Titans
play host to the 2005 Western Gymnastics Conference Championships at Titan
Gym beginning at 7 p.m. Utah State, Southern Utah, and Boise State all
visit Orange County to decide the conference's champion.
