Oregon State Beats Out Three Others in Opener Jan. 7, 2005 Fullerton, Calif.
Back-to-back scores of better than 49.000 on floor
exercise and vault in the second and third rotations helped lift the Oregon
State women's gymnastics team to a season-opening victory over three other
schools on Friday night at Titan Gym.
The Beavers scored a 195.200 to win the event and was followed by Pacific-10
Conference rival Washington (194.625), host Cal State Fullerton (193.225),
and Sacramento State (192.275).
OSU took three of the top four places on vault, led by Angela Morales'
9.90. Megan Devencenzi and Heather Justus scored 9.875's to finish in
a three-way tie for second with Sacramento State's Jessica Hoffman.
That was followed by a strong performance from Justus and Morales on floor,
as both tied for second with a 9.95.
The highlight of the meet came on the floor as Washington's individual
all-around champion Carly Dockendorf scored a perfect 10, leading the
Huskies to a meet-best 49.725 on the apparatus as all five scores were
better than 9.90.
Dockendorf finished with a 39.300 to win the all-around title by 0.3 over
Cal State Fullerton sophomore Erica Ficarrotta. The Titans' Brittany Hoffman
finished third in the all-around with a 38.675.
In other events, Alexis Tsurumoto of Sacramento State won on bars with
a 9.85 and Dockendorf supplemented her floor title by finishing first
on beam with a 9.825.
For the Titans, sophomore Brittany Hoffman and senior Annette Reyes finished
in a tie for fourth on beam with a 9.775 and Ficarrotta finished in a
tie for sixth on floor with a 9.925.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next Friday (Jan. 14) as they travel
to San Jose State for a 7 p.m. dual meet.
