Anthony Bolton scored a career-high 24 points including a 3-point basket
in the final second of regulation and six free throws in six tries in
the final 43 seconds of overtime Saturday night to lead Cal State Fullerton
to an 88-85 win over Cal Poly.
The overtime win was the Titans fifth in five chances this year
and lifted their record to 10-18 overall and 8-10 in the Big West. Cal
Poly got a career-high 32 points from Shane Schilling but fell to 14-13
and 10-8.
Fullerton will be the No. 6 seed in the Big West post-season tournament
and play No. 3 seeded Utah State at about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the
Anaheim Convention Center. Cal Poly is the No. 4 seed and will play No.
5 Idaho at noon.
Varnie Dennis had 16 points and 7 rebounds for the Mustangs, who overcame
an early 14-point Fullerton lead and led for most of the final 10 minutes
of regulation. Jason Allen hit two free throws with six seconds left for
a 72-69 lead but Bolton fired one in from the top of the key with three
tenths of a second remaining to tie it.
In overtime, Fullerton took the lead for good at 79-76 on a 3-pointer
from the corner by Fedi Holm-Hadulla with 55 seconds to play. Fullerton
led 82-76 with 30 seconds left after Bolton hit two free throws and Pape
Sow, who had a career-high 17 rebounds, hit one. Eric Jackson hit a 3-pointer
with 20 seconds left before Sow hit two free throws to make it 84-79.
Steve Geary completd a 3-point play with 12 seconds left before Bolton
hit two more free throws to make it 86-82 with 11 seconds remaining. Geary
banked in a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left, Bolton hit two more free throws
with 5 seconds left and Geary came up short on a long 3-pointer at the
buzzer.
Fullerton scored a season-high 88 points, shot a season-high 60 percent
from 3-point range and made a season-high 25 free throws in 29 tries for
86 percent. The Titans are last in the Big West in team free-throw shooting
at 63 percent.
Cal Poly shot only 33 per cent from 3-point range and was outrebounded
43-33. But Fullerton committed 16 turnovers to only 8 for the Mustangs,
who beat Fullerton, 65-44, in San Luis Obispo in early January.
