Andrew Leads CSF to 3rd OT Win in a Row
Jan. 11, 2003– Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Derick Andrew scored 16 points including seven in a row down the stretch to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 57-53 Big West Conference overtime victory over Long Beach State. The win was Fullerton’s third in succession and all have gone to overtime.

The Titans are now 5-8, 3-1 and have matched last season’s victory total.
Tony Darden scored 11 points to lead the 49ers, who lost their tenth game in a row to fall to 1-11, 0-3.

Andrew scored the final four points of regulation to force the extra period then hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and the Titans never relinquished the lead. Anthony Bolton sealed the win with a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining, giving him 10 points.

Long Beach State had the ball for the last possession of regulation but fumbled it away just before the buzzer. The 49ers had rallied from a 37-30 deficit, mostly on the strength of making four consecutive 3-point field goals, two by Jibril Hodges with the last one giving the 49ers a 47-43 lead with 2:33 to play. The 49ers didn’t score again until Darden hit a 3-pionter with 1:12 left in overtime. He hit another one with 30 seconds left to draw Long Beach State to within 55-53. Andrew missed the front end of a one-and-one for Fullerton but Antoine Jackson did the same for Long Beach with 18 seconds left. Jamal Forcheney got the rebound and was fouled and he missed as well, but the 49ers turned it over before Bolton sealed it.

Both teams played deliberately with Fullerton milking the shot clock on every possession, even when it fell behind in regulation. Long Beach stayed in the game with its 3-point shooting, making 10 of 21. the 49ers made only eight 2-point baskets.

Fullerton’s 5-point halftime lead was the biggest of the first 20-minute period with Andrew hitting two free throws at 1:16 for the 29-24 halftime score. Fullerton outrebounded the 49ers, 30-18, with forward Ralphy Holmes leading the way with nine. Fullerton hasn’t been 3-1 in Big West play since the 1990-91 season.
The Titans played three overtime games in a row in the 1985-86 season, winning only one of them.

Third-year Coach Donny Daniels never had beaten UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine or Long Beach State in his two previous seasons. He has beaten all of them in the last eight days.
