Andrew Leads CSF to 3rd OT Win in a Row Jan. 11, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.

Derick Andrew scored 16 points including seven in a row down the stretch
to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 57-53 Big West Conference overtime victory
over Long Beach State. The win was Fullertons third in succession
and all have gone to overtime.
The Titans are now 5-8, 3-1 and have matched last seasons victory
total.
Tony Darden scored 11 points to lead the 49ers, who lost their tenth game
in a row to fall to 1-11, 0-3.
Andrew scored the final four points of regulation to force the extra period
then hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and the Titans never relinquished
the lead. Anthony Bolton sealed the win with a pair of free throws with
five seconds remaining, giving him 10 points.
Long Beach State had the ball for the last possession of regulation but
fumbled it away just before the buzzer. The 49ers had rallied from a 37-30
deficit, mostly on the strength of making four consecutive 3-point field
goals, two by Jibril Hodges with the last one giving the 49ers a 47-43
lead with 2:33 to play. The 49ers didnt score again until Darden
hit a 3-pionter with 1:12 left in overtime. He hit another one with 30
seconds left to draw Long Beach State to within 55-53. Andrew missed the
front end of a one-and-one for Fullerton but Antoine Jackson did the same
for Long Beach with 18 seconds left. Jamal Forcheney got the rebound and
was fouled and he missed as well, but the 49ers turned it over before
Bolton sealed it.
Both teams played deliberately with Fullerton milking the shot clock on
every possession, even when it fell behind in regulation. Long Beach stayed
in the game with its 3-point shooting, making 10 of 21. the 49ers made
only eight 2-point baskets.
Fullertons 5-point halftime lead was the biggest of the first 20-minute
period with Andrew hitting two free throws at 1:16 for the 29-24 halftime
score. Fullerton outrebounded the 49ers, 30-18, with forward Ralphy Holmes
leading the way with nine. Fullerton hasnt been 3-1 in Big West
play since the 1990-91 season.
The Titans played three overtime games in a row in the 1985-86 season,
winning only one of them.
Third-year Coach Donny Daniels never had beaten UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine
or Long Beach State in his two previous seasons. He has beaten all of
them in the last eight days.
