Donnelly Nets a Pair as Titans Beat Cal Poly, 4-1 Oct. 16, 2002 San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Tim Donnelly scored a pair of goals to lead Cal State
Fullerton to a 4-1 win over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference men's soccer
match in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night.
Cal State Fullerton improved to 4-6-1 (1-1 Big West) while the Mustangs
fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the Big West.
The Mustangs had a variety of chances throughout the game, outshooting
the Titans, 12-7. Cal State Fullerton grabbed the lead on a goal by Eugene
Brooks at 23:06, as he volleyed a Hector Orellana pass by Mustang goalkeeper
Luke Albertalli.
Just 0:21 into the second half, Donnelly increased the Titan lead to two
goals on an unassisted goal.
The Mustangs responded 13 minutes later, when Francisco Marmolejo scored
off a Scott Gellman corner kick at 59:30.
However, the Mustangs’ luck turned sour as Eibad Ghori was sent
off the field at 66:10 with a red card for a breakaway foul just outside
the Cal Poly box. On the ensuing free kick, Hector Orellana blasted a
20-yard shot into the net to boost the lead to two goals. Donnelly then
scored for the Titans at 80:40 minute to solidify the Cal State Fullerton
advantage.
Albertalli made four saves in goal for the Mustangs. Sam Reynolds made
five saves for the Titans before giving way to Kyle Polak in the 83rd
minute. Polak made two saves in goal.
Cal Poly hits the road on Saturday night, as it takes on UC Irvine in
at 7:00 pm match. Cal State Fullerton returns home on Saturday to face
UC Riverside at 7:00 pm.
