Charles Mitchell broke a 1-1 tie with about 10 minutes
to play Wednesday night as Cal State Northridge beat Cal State Fullerton,
2-1, in Big West Conference men's soccer action.
The win improved the Matadors' record to 10-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the
Big West. The Titans saw their 4-game unbeaten streak end and their record
fall to 6-7-2 and 2-2-1.
Mitchell received a cross in stride from Jesse Servin on a two-on-one
break and beat helpless Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynolds from near the top
of the box, straight out, at 79:51.
The Titans had tied the match in the 62nd minute when Hector Orellana's
free kick from about 25 yards trickled into the goal after Matadors' keeper
Joe Barton got a hand on it. Barton made a total of 8 saves including
stopping several one-on-one attempts by Fullerton. Reynolds was equally
brilliant, making 9 saves including two back-to-back at point-blank range
with about 15 minutes remaining.
Cal State Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Servin scored
from the goal mouth, converting a crisp cross from the left side from
Will Beard at 27:37.
Fullerton visits UC Irvine on Saturday night while the Matadors host UC
Riverside on Saturday afternoon.
