Lima's Late Goal Caps Titan Comeback Aug. 30, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Senior Adriano Lima's goal in the 83rd minute broke
a 2-2 tie and lifted Cal State Fullerton to a 3-2 season-opening victory
over Florida International in the second match of the 2002 SOCCER TOWN
Classic on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
Fullerton is 1-0 while Florida International falls to 0-1. The Titans
have won their last five consecutive season openers, four of those coming
at home.
In a very evenly-played first half, the Titans struck quickly as junior
forward Hector Orellana found the back of the net just 1:09 into the match.
The play began when senior David Dischner smacked a shot off the goalkeeper's
hands from the top of the box and the ball fell at the feet of Orellana,
who struck it near post for the lone goal of the half.
Florida International knotted the match at 1-1 in the 49th minute when
Lucas Scudeler chipped it to teammate Allen Handy in the box, who fought
off one defender and pushed it passed the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Sam Reynolds. The Golden Panthers took the lead in the 73rd minute as
John Pulido took a crisp crossing pass from teammate Zachary Peoples and
fired it home from 18 yards out for the 2-1 advantage.
The Titans drew even in the 80th minute, as Orellana scored his second
goal of the game off his own blocked penalty kick after Dischner was taken
down in the penalty area.
Less than three minutes later, Lima put the Titans ahead, dribbling over
a defender and pushing a shot towards the far post which trickled past
keeper Roy Rosenberg for the 3-2 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton will take on Boston University on Sunday (Sept. 1)
at approximately 7 p.m. following the UCLA-Florida International contest
at 5 p.m. In earlier action Friday, UCLA exploded for three goals in the
final 20 minutes for a 4-1 win over Boston U.
