Titans Stun No. 1 Indiana Behind Orellana's Late PK Oct. 25, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box
Score
Hector Orellanas penalty kick with less than seven minutes to play
Friday night gave Cal State Fullerton a 2-1 mens soccer upset victory
over No. 1-ranked Indiana.
The Hoosiers fell to 12-2-2 on the season while the Titans evened their
record at 6-6-2. Its the fifth time Coach Al Mistri has seen his
Titan team upset a No. 1-ranked opponent in nine tries in his 22 seasons
at Fullerton. Its the second time the Hoosiers were the victims,
having suffered the same fate in a tournament at UCLA in 1994.
Orellana set up his own penalty kick with a run down the left side. His
hard cross drew a handball in the penalty box. The goal was his team-leading
ninth of the year, his second on a PK.
Indiana scored the games first goal at 47:03 when Pat Noonan got
behind the Titan defense and beat Sam Reynolds from about 20 yards for
his team-high 11th goal of the season. But the Titans tied the score about
three minutes later when Brent Whitfield converted a nifty back pass from
Fouzi Elmojahid into a 15-yard goal to the left post that beat goalkeeper
Jay Nolly and denied him a chance at his eighth shutout of the year.
Indiana outshot the Titans, 17-10, but most of that advantage came in
the first half. Fullerton outshot the visitors in the second half, 6-3.
Indiana was called offsides 14 times.
Indiana had allowed more than one goal only once all season, in its other
loss, a 3-0 decision at St. Johns back on Sept. 7.
The last time Fullerton beat a No. 1 team was in the 1996 NCAA playoffs
as the Titans won at home over UCLA.
