to set up Rob Friend's goal with less than two minutes left as 24th-ranked
UC Santa Barbara beat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in the Big West Conference
men's soccer opener in Santa Barbara Saturday night.
The win improves UCSB's record to 9-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Big West
play.
Fullerton drops to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Big West.
Fullerton had tied the score at 1-1 less than five minutes earlier when
Titan forward Brent Whitfield fed forward Hector Orellana for a one-timer
at the 83:28 mark. The goal was Orellana's team-leading sixth of the campaign.
Santa Barbara scored the only goal of the first half when junior midfielder
Neil Jones looped a pass into the penalty box and sophomore forward Drew
McAthy slid one past Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynolds from about eight yards
in
front of the goal. The score came in the 35th minute.
The match was a rough one as UCSB committed 24 fouls and Fullerton had
ten.
Each team had a player receive a red card and Fullerton also had three
players receive yellow cards, while the Gauchos had two.
Reynolds played a solid match for the Titans, coming-up with nine saves.
Danny Kennedy had four for the Gauchos.
