Offense Finally Erupts to Upset No. 7 UCSB Oct. 25, 2003 - Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
Ignacio Cid scored twice and Hector Orellana put in the tie-breaker Saturday
night as Cal State Fullerton erupted for a 4-1 Big West Conference men's
soccer victory over No. 7-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
Orellana scored exactly 10 minutes into the second half after a long pass
from Gordon Kljestan to break a 1-1 tie. Cid scored his second goal of
the night less than two minutes later with a blast from the left side
past Gauchos' keeper Dan Kennedy. Brent Whitfield headed in the final
goal at 72:22 with an assist from Cid.
Fullerton (6-8-1, 2-4) took a lead 15 minutes into the match when Cid
headed in a corner kick from Orellana. UCSB (11-2-1, 4-1) tied the match
early in the second half when Memo Arzate scored on a penalty kick after
he had been tripped from behind in the penalty box.
Sam Reynolds was credited with 5 saves while picking up the win in the
nets for the Titans, who had managed a total of four goals while going
1-4 in their last five matches. Cid had been without a goal since netting
three scores in the first two matches of the season and Orellana, the
school's No. 7 all-time scorer, had only one previous goal this year and
it came on a penalty kick.
Assistant Coach Bob Ammann directed the win for the Titans. Head Coach
Al Mistri was stranded in his home in the San Bernardino Mountains by
the raging brushfires.
