Titans, Bruins Beat Big Ten Rivals Aug. 29, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box score
UCLA and Cal State Fullerton each won their
first-round matches Friday in the Soccer Town Classic Friday night in
Titan Stadium as the No. 1-ranked Bruins routed No. 16-ranked Penn State,
5-2, and the Titans edged Ohio State, 1-0. The locals will trade opponents
Sunday night in the final round of the pre-determined tourney.
Ignacio Cid booted in a rebound of a Hector Orellana shot with about 23
minutes to play to make Fullerton a winner in its sesaon opener. Fullerton
outshot the Buckeyes, 17-10, but Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynols had to make
four saves compared to only one by OSU's Ray Burse, Jr.
Matt Taylor scored a hat trick for UCLA as the Bruins overcame an early
Penn State goal to beat the Nittany Lions handily. It was a rematch of
last year's NCAA playoff match where the Bruins spotted PSU a goal and
then came back to win, 7-1.
Joe Zewe converted a 2-on-1 to beat Zach Wells and give Penn State the
1-0 lead midway through the first half. Taylor's first goal came after
a scramble in the PSU goal mouth five minutes before halftime. He scored
twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half for a 3-1 lead and John
Carson and Chad Barrett added goals as UCLA outshot Penn State, 19-6.
Fullerton will play UCLA in a Sept. 14 match at the Home Depot Center
in Carson.
