Titans Blank No. 16-Ranked Penn State Aug. 31, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box score
Sophomore Ignacio Cid scored a pair of unassisted
second-half goals to carry Cal State Fullerton to a 2-0 victory Sunday
night in the final game of the 2003 Soccer Town Classic at Cal State Fullerton.
UCLA, which earlier Sunday evening beat Ohio State, 1-0, won the Classic
team title by virtue of a plus-four goal differential. The Titans had
a plus three and settled for runnerup honors.
Cid was selected the tourney's MVP after scoring all three Titan goals
(1-0 win over Ohio State on Friday). UCLA's Matt Taylor was selected outstanding
offensive playher based on his 3-goal performance in Friday's 5-2 win
over Penn State. Titans' freshman Marco Rodriguez was tabbed top defensive
player for his role in the pair of shutouts.
Penn State went a man down in the 53rd minute when Pasi Karppinen received
his second yellow card. Cid scored less than five minutes later when he
beat goalkeeper Matt Novchich from about 25 yards into the upper left
hand corner. Cid went to the near post for his second goal in the 65th
minute. He later hit a post and the side of the net with shots. Fullerton
outshot PSU, 19-10, and had 8 cornerkicks to 3 for the Nittany Lions.
Sam Reynolds logged 3 saves in picking up his second shutout in the net
for Fullerton.
No. 1-ranked UCLA got the lone score of its match when Chad Barrett kicked
in a rebound of his own header, which bounced off Ohio State goalkeeper
Ray Burse, Jr. A looping cross by Brandon Owens set the play up in the
66th minute. Zach Wells made 2 saves in posting the shutout.
Fullerton plays next weekend in a tournament at California and meets UCLA
on Sept. 14 in the Home Depot Center.
