Sept. 19, 2004 – Fullerton, CA

Cal-UCI Box Score | Stanford-CSF Box Score

James Twellman's penalty kick goal with 18:19 remaining to play Sunday night gave Stanford a 2-1 victory over host Cal State Fullerton and the championship of the Titan Men's Soccer Classic.

The Cardinal went 2-0 in the tourney and Twellman's goal was Stanford's fourth on the weekend to give it the title over California, which also went 2-0 after Sunday's 2-1 win over UC Irvine, but scored only 3 goals.

Stanford is now 5-0-1 on the season and Cal is 6-0-0. Both are ranked in the national Top 20. UC Irvine placed fourth and is now 2-4-0 while Fullerton took third place and fell to 0-5-1 to tie for the longest winless streak in the school's Div. I history dating to 1975. Fullerton had a 6-game losing streak in 1983 and went 0-4-2 early in the 1990 season.

Fullerton's Jose Barragan tackled Stanford's Galen Thompson from behind in the penalty box to set up Twellman's goal, which gave Stanford a 2-0 lead. It not only gave Stanford the tourney tie-breaker but proved decisive in the match when Fullerton's Steve Moreno kicked in a rebound of an Allen Chote shot about four minutes later.

The Titans had three last-minute attempts to tie. Nacho Cid shot wide and then Moreno's bid with about 20 seconds left was stopped by a Stanford defender for a team save. The ensuing cornerkick allowed Ben Hofstetter a desperation shot that went over the net as time expired.

Stanford scored first late in the first half when substitutes K. C. Coyne and Dan Shapiro collaborated on a goal a few minutes after checking in. The Titans gave up possession about 40 yards out to set up a 4-on-2 break and Coyne crossed from the left side to Shapiro who scored from about 15 yards on the right wing. Robby Fulton got the win in goal for Stanford in his season's debut and had to make only one save.

In the Sunday opener, all the scoring occurred in a span of 2:19 midway through the second half. Carl Acosta scored at 69:22 for Cal when he rebounded a Pieter Berger shot. Brad Evans tied the match at 70:03 when he knocked in a rebound of a Brandon Tario attempt. The game winner came at 71:41 when Nick Hartzke booted in a penalty kick after Acosta was tripped after a free kick from the penalty box line.

UCI starting goalkeeper Ryan Mathy gave way to Cameron Rossi at the 17:03 mark after a right leg injury and Rossi took the loss.

The all-tournament team:
Stanford - Seyi Abolaji, Michael Brown, Bronson McDonald & Darren Fernandez
Cal - Troy Roberts, Carl Acosta, Pieter Berger
