Steve Moreno's goal in the third minute gave Cal State Fullerton all the
offense it needed as the Titans picked up their first win of the season
with a 1-0 victory over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Aggie Field.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 4-6-1 on the season while the Titans
improve to 1-6-2.
Fullerton wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as it came out
aggressive to start the game. On their first attack, the Titans' Andrew
Sam came along the right side before sending a ball into the box in front
of Aggie goalkeeper Charles Warne. Moreno volleyed the ball to the left
corner of the goal at the 2:48 mark for the 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half the two teams would play to a draw as each team had
opportunities, but could not convert. The Aggies' Ryan Shaw and Connor
Voss each had headers that went just wide of the goal while Titan goalkeeper
Matt Cowan, in his first collegiate start, made two saves as Fullerton
entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Aggies were able to keep the ball on the Titan
half of the field for the majority of play. UC Davis was clearly the move
aggressive team, controlling play and creating the greater number of scoring
opportunities. It was not enough as for the fourth time this season the
Aggies failed to get on the board, despite outshooting the Titans 12-9.
Warne finished the day with four saves as did Cowan, who was playing in
just his second game of the season.
Fullerton returns to Big West Conference play Wednesday night hosting
Cal State Northridge.
