Ignacio Cid scored in the fourth minute and the Titans rode that goal
to a 1-0 victory Sunday over visiting Cal Poly SLO to wrap up the Big
West Conference men’s soccer schedule for 2004.
Coupled with Friday night’s 3-1 win in San Luis Obispo, the Titans’
series sweep of the Mustangs moved them ahead of Cal Poly and UC Irvine
into fourth place in the final Big West standings. Fullerton finishes
4-6-0 in the Big West and 6-10-2 overall. Cal Poly ends up 3-6-1 and 7-7-4.
Fullerton’s Alfredo Tapia broke loose on the right flank and sent
a short cross toward the middle of the field that Cid booted past Cal
Poly goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe on the first shot of the game at 3:46.
Fullerton totally dominated the first half, outshooting Cal Poly, 11-0.
Only a couple of brilliant saves by Coupe kept Cal Poly close. The second
half was much more even although Cal Poly still managed only 4 shots,
none until a header by Eibad Ghori on a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Titan senior goalkeeper Sam Reynolds tipped a hard shot by Moses Venegas
over the cross bar in the 67th minute to deny Cal Poly its best scoring
opportunity and log a win in his final game in the nets for the Titans.
