Samari's OT Goal Gives Titans Win Over CSUN
The win was the second in a row for the Titans, now 2-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the Big West. The Matadors, defending conference champions, fell to 7-4-0 overall and 2-1 in the Big West going into their Saturday showdown with No. 1-ranked UC Santa Barbara (11-0-1, 4-0-0 after Wednesday's win at UC Riverside. Samari took a short cross from Alfredo Tapia and chipped it over onrushing goalkeeper Radames Lafaurie and under the crossbar from just inside the top of the penalty box. It was Samari's first goal of the season. Northridge needed a goal by Ryan Rossi with 3:20 remaining in regulation to force overtime. Titan goalkeeper Matt Cowan saved a shot from Willie Sims but then lost his grip on the ball and Rossi capitalized from about three feet away. It was Northridge's first overtime game of the year but the fifth for the Titans, who are now 1-2-2 with bonus minutes. Fullerton took a 3-2 lead in the 66th minute when Jose Barragan headed in a long lead pass from Sean Gallinger. It gave the Titans their first lead of the home season in their sixth match. The teams exchanged a pair of goals each on the first four shots of the match all in in the first 22 minutes. Sims outran a defender to beat Cowan from the top of the box at 4:33 but Fullerton's Andrew Sam headed in a cross from Skyler Thuresson to tie it less than four minutes later. At 10:33 Jesse Servin flicked in a Yossi Raz free kick for CSUN but the Titans answered at the 22-minute mark when Ignacio Cid scored off a pass from Tapia, who had taken a free kick from Anthony Dedeaux. Barragan was playing his first game on the Fullerton front line after starting the first eight matches as a defender. He created numerous opportunities and twice was denied breakaway attempts by Lafaurie, who made three saves all on Barragan shots. Cowan was credited with four saves. Fullerton, which has seen all 10 of its matches decided
by one goal or less, plays Saturday night at UC Irvine.
