Cid Assists on All Three Goals in CSF Win
Oct. 25, 2004 – Fullerton, CA

Box Score

Ignacio Cid assisted on all three goals Monday night as Cal State Fullerton cruised to a 3-0 men’s soccer victory over visiting Chapman University.

The Titans (3-7-2) got goals from Andrew Sam, Ben Hofstetter and Jani Valtonen in stretching their unbeaten streak at home to a modest three games. It was their first contest of the season decided by more than one goal.

The Div. III Panthers (2-10-3) were outshot by the Div. I Titans, 20-10, but had at least three excellent scoring chances. Brock Schermerhorn hit the left post in the second half and Russell Lloyd missed an open net when Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynolds lost the ball after colliding with a teammate while trying to catch a cross. Brandon Young also rifled a shot that Reynolds tipped just over the cross bar.

Reynolds finished with two saves in logging his second shutout and first victory of the season.

Sam’s goal came in the 14th minute when he took a lead pass from Cid and eventually headed in his own rebound off starting goalkeeper Josh Kaplan-Lyman. Hofstetter scored with about five minutes left in the first half when he volleyed into the lower left corner a pass from Cid, who had dribbled through several Panther defenders.

Fullerton’s final goal came in the 81st minute when Cid fed Valtonen streaking down the middle from near midfield and the senior from Finland beat second-half keeper Michael Lefonts from about 20 yards out.

Fullerton hosts first-place UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night. The Gauchos beat the Titans, 4-3, in double overtime in their first meeting in Santa Barbara on Oct. 6. Chapman hosts Alliant International in its home finale on Friday night.
