Sam Reynolds blocked a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and defender
Anthony Dedeaux kicked away another near goal in the 89th minute Sunday
afternoon to allow Cal State Fullerton to hang on for a 1-1 tie with UCLA
in non-conference men's soccer action.
The No. 11-ranked Bruins are now 4-1-2 on the year while the Titans are
0-5-2 for the longest winless streak in the school's Div. I history.
UCLA scored its only goal in the first minute when Mike Enfield banged
in a rebound of a Kamani Hill shot that caromed off Reynolds. Fullerton
tied it in the 29th minute when Steve Moreno volleyed a cross from Brent
Barnes past UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed from about 20 yards out for his
second goal of the year.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities but the Bruins had the more
threatening chances. Chad Barrett was denied on the penalty kick set up
when Jose Barragan fouled in the box to stop a 2-on-1 break by Enfield
and Benny Feilhaber. Evan Corey knocked one off the right post late in
the first half and Ahmed Khalil went too high on a point-blank try late
in the first overtime period. Ryan Valdez appeared to knock in the game
winner with 1:30 go play in regulation but Dedeaux was guarding a post
and booted the ball away at the goal line.Twice Reynolds was drawn well
out of the box, once for an extended chase of the ball, but UCLA couldn't
find the ball and/or the net.
Reynolds finished with 5 saves while Reed had 4 in the free-wheeling affair
on a hot and hazy afternoon.
In their last 11 meetings, the two teams now stand at 5-5-1.
Fullerton has only an alumni game at 5 p.m. on Saturday on tap this week
while UCLA hosts Oregon State on Friday night.
